Brooksby overturns 5-1 deficit to knock Munar out in Shanghai
Jenson Brooksby recovered from 5-1 down in the opening set to beat Jaume Munar 7-5, 6-4 at the Shanghai Masters. The American advanced to face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Jenson Brooksby recovered from a difficult start to defeat Jaume Munar 7-5, 6-4 in the first round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Thursday. The tournament's official results recorded a match lasting one hour, 49 minutes and 36 seconds on Grandstand 2, with the American advancing in straight sets.

According to Cadena SER's Radio Mallorca report, Munar led 5-1 after roughly half an hour before Brooksby turned the opening set around. The American won six successive games to take it 7-5, then secured the second set 6-4. The defeat followed Munar's run to the Tokyo semifinals, where Carlos Alcaraz had ended his challenge. Brooksby will next face another Spaniard, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

The match statistics published by Tennis.com show how Brooksby sustained pressure on Munar's service games. He created 11 break-point opportunities and converted four, while Munar took two of his five chances. Brooksby saved three break points and held in nine of his 11 service games, compared with seven holds from 11 for Munar across the two sets.

Brooksby's second serve was another clear statistical advantage. He won 15 of 21 points behind it, a 71% success rate, while Munar won 13 of 30, or 43%. Both players finished with three aces, but Brooksby recorded no double faults to Munar's three. Their first-serve points won were much closer: 68% for Brooksby and 66% for Munar.

The result sent the lower-ranked player through: Tennis.com's match listing placed Brooksby at No. 102 and Munar at No. 49. Elsewhere on Grandstand 2, the official tournament results confirmed that Pablo Carreno Busta recovered from losing the first set to beat Mariano Navone 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in two hours, 50 minutes and 41 seconds.

Other completed first-round matches included Matteo Arnaldi's 6-3, 6-1 victory over qualifier Bernard Tomic on Show Court 3. Sebastian Baez also advanced on that court, coming back to defeat Marcos Giron 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Zizou Bergs beat Vit Kopriva 6-3, 6-1 on Grandstand 2, joining Brooksby among Thursday's straight-sets winners in Shanghai.
