British Athletics Delivers Historic Golden Treble at World Indoor Championships
Hodgkinson, Hunter Bell, and Caudery claimed three gold medals in 29 minutes, creating the greatest night for British athletics since London 2012.

Great Britain produced a performance for the ages at the World Indoor Championships in Poland, with three extraordinary athletes delivering gold medals within a breathtaking 29-minute span that evoked memories of Super Saturday from the London 2012 Olympics.

The historic evening began with Georgia Hunter Bell staging a dramatic comeback in the womens 1500m, hauling in Ethiopian Girke Haylom who had established a commanding 20-meter lead over the field. Hunter Bell powered clear in the final stages to claim gold in 3:58.53, nearly a second ahead of Australias Jessica Hull who took silver in 3:59.54.

Fifteen minutes later, Molly Caudery overcame illness and injury concerns to deliver a flawless pole vault performance, clearing 4.85m to secure gold. The 25-year-old had woken up feeling so unwell that she feared having to withdraw from competition, yet found the strength to outjump Slovenias Tina Sutej for the title.

The crescendo came when Keely Hodgkinson dominated the womens 800m from start to finish, leading from gun to tape with a championship record time of 1:55.30 - the second-fastest indoor time in history behind only her own world record set just last month.

The emotional aftermath created an indelible image as the three champions embraced in pure delirium, screaming with joy as they realized the magnitude of their collective achievement. Their celebration could be heard high in the Torun stands and hopefully echoed in homes across Britain.

Hunter Bells triumph represented perhaps the most remarkable comeback story in modern athletics. In 2017, she quit her promising track career with a broken body, only to restart her journey in 2022 with a parkrun on a cold March morning in Bushy Park, southwest London. Two years later, at age 30, she became an Olympic bronze medallist. Now, at 32, she stands as world champion.

Just thought be patient, said Hunter Bell after her victory. I backed myself. To get my first gold medal makes me really happy.

Cauderys path to gold proved equally dramatic. The pole vaulter has endured two painful years battling injuries and setbacks since winning world indoor gold in Glasgow in 2024. Last September, she ruptured ankle ligaments during warm-up at the outdoor world championships, left the venue in a wheelchair, and was told her ankle might never fully recover.

You wouldnt believe the last six months I have had, Caudery reflected. Even six weeks ago, I couldnt get off the ground and this wasnt in my sight. And I woke up this morning ill and not even knowing if I was going to be able to jump.

Hodgkinsons dominance capped the perfect evening, though her journey to this moment included its own obstacles. After the Paris Olympics, she remained sidelined for 376 days due to three hamstring injuries, the final one occurring after an eight-hour round trip to Windsor Castle to collect her MBE in May.

Frustration mounted during her recovery, with coach Trevor Painter even providing a Himalayan salt lamp to help calm her down. However, five months of interrupted training ultimately made her stronger than ever.

Victory came in classic Hodgkinson style as she charged to the front after the break and applied relentless pressure until her opponents began to crack. She passed halfway in a lightning-quick 56.96 seconds, with main rival Aubrey Werro staying within striking distance before Hodgkinson powered home, relegating the Swiss athlete to silver in 1:56.64.

I wanted to let loose, and make everyone work, work hard, Hodgkinson explained. And who knows, maybe on another day, without two races in my legs, I would have had the world record again.

This victory completed Hodgkinsons remarkable medal collection: Olympics, world and European titles both indoors and outdoors, plus Commonwealth Games gold. The night belonged not just to her, but to British athletics as a whole, proving that the good times have returned once again.
