Bristol climb to third as Christian Wade equals Premiership try record
Bristol beat Exeter 20-7 to move into third place, while Christian Wade drew level with Chris Ashton on 101 top-flight tries in Newcastle's first league win of the season.

Bristol climbed to third in the Premiership with a 20-7 victory over Exeter at Ashton Gate, while Christian Wade matched the competition's try-scoring record as Newcastle secured their first league win of the season. According to the Guardian's roundup, which carried Press Association reporting, both matches were played in difficult weather conditions.

Watch the highlights:

Bristol established their advantage when Harry Randall's long pass gave Gabriel Ibitoye space to score on the left wing. James Williams converted from the touchline and added a penalty from 35 metres three minutes later. Exeter responded through a driven try by Greg Fisilau after kicking a penalty to the corner, with Henry Slade's conversion reducing the deficit to 10-7.

The visitors remained within reach late in the match but opted against taking two kickable penalties inside the 22 during the final 10 minutes. Bristol then made the result secure: Williams landed another penalty with three minutes remaining, before Luka Ivanishvili crossed to extend the margin. The win was Bristol's fifth consecutive league success against Exeter, achieved in heavy rain and strong winds.

At Kingston Park, Wade's 49th-minute try brought his top-flight total to 101, drawing him level with Chris Ashton. The former Sale winger was at the ground to see the record matched. Newcastle had trailed Sale 3-0 at half-time but recovered to win 17-3 in gale-force conditions, with Wade's score contributing to their breakthrough result of the campaign.

Newcastle captain George McGuigan scored their other try and Josh Hodge supplied seven points with the boot. Sale's only points came from a George Ford penalty, leaving the visitors unable to add to their first-half advantage. For Wade, the milestone came at the age of 35; the winger has one England cap.

The roundup also reported Gloucester's 23-5 win over Bath on Friday night, which kept them top of the table. Freddie Thomas and Max Llewellyn scored tries, and George Barton converted both while adding three penalties. Bath's sole reply was a Kepueli Tuipulotu try. Despite dominating much of the first half, Bath suffered a third consecutive defeat and lost Santiago Carreras and Guy Pepper to injuries.
