Brighton beat Coventry 5-0 as five scorers extend hosts' goalless start

Brighton beat Coventry City 5-0 at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Sunday, September 13, with five different players scoring in the Premier League match. The result left Frank Lampard's promoted side without a point or a goal after four league fixtures, according to BBC Sport's report on Coventry's start to the season.

Brighton's official match record lists Babis Kostoulas as the opening scorer in the 35th minute, with Malick Yalcouye doubling the advantage in the 51st. The visitors had therefore established a two-goal cushion early in the second half after going into the interval with only a narrow lead. Four of their five goals arrived after the break.

Coventry had offered a threat before the match moved decisively away from them. BBC Sport reported that the hosts attempted 10 shots in the first half, with Frank Onyeka and Jack Rudoni among those involved in their chances. After Brighton's second goal, Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off for an elbow, leaving Coventry to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.

Pascal Gross converted a penalty in the 70th minute to make it 3-0, before Lewis Dunk added Brighton's fourth in the 83rd. Yasin Ayari completed the scoring in the fourth minute of added time. The club's official record confirms a clean sheet alongside those five goals, with Kostoulas, Yalcouye, Gross, Dunk and Ayari sharing the scoring rather than any one player claiming a multiple-goal performance.

For Coventry, the defeat followed an opening sequence that had already included trips to Arsenal and Manchester City. Their return to the Premier League after 25 years has brought four consecutive losses. BBC Sport reported that the Brighton result also equalled the heaviest defeat of Lampard's managerial career.

Lampard, speaking to Sky Sports in remarks carried by the BBC, said his players had kept working but needed to accept responsibility and improve. He pointed to the difficulty of the early fixtures while acknowledging the greater pressure of Premier League football and the limited experience of many of his players at that level.
