Brighton beat Coventry 5-0 as Dunk scores from 35 yards

Brighton beat Coventry City 5-0 at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Sunday, with Lewis Dunk scoring from 35 yards as the home side suffered a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat. According to Ben Bloom’s match report for the Guardian, Coventry became only the second team in the competition’s history to lose their opening four games without scoring.

Charalampos Kostoulas put Brighton ahead in the 35th minute after Coventry failed to clear an Olivier Boscagli cross. The teenage Greek striker controlled the ball, headed it between two defenders and finished into the bottom corner for his first league goal of the season. Brighton had managed only one shot on target from seven attempts during the opening 20 minutes before finding their breakthrough.

Coventry had opportunities of their own before falling behind. Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen twice denied Jack Rudoni, first pushing away a volley with other home players close to the ball, then tipping a header over the bar. Those saves kept the match level until Kostoulas scored, leaving Frank Lampard’s team trailing by one goal at the interval despite their chances.

The game moved decisively away from Coventry after the break. Malick Yalcouyé ran behind the defence and finished past Carl Rushworth to double Brighton’s advantage. Shortly afterwards, referee Tony Harrington sent off Taiwo Awoniyi for leading with his elbow into Maxim De Cuyper’s face. Coventry therefore faced the task of recovering a two-goal deficit with only 10 players.

Pascal Gross added Brighton’s third from the penalty spot after Bobby Thomas brought down Kostoulas inside the area. Dunk then drove his long-range effort into the top corner, and Yasin Ayari completed the scoring in added time with a curling shot from distance into the bottom corner. The five goals came from five different players for Fabian Hürzeler’s side.

For Coventry, the result extended a start that has produced neither a league point nor a goal since promotion. The Guardian identified Crystal Palace in 2017-18 as the only previous Premier League team to begin with four scoreless defeats. Brighton, meanwhile, finished the match having scored more goals and created more big chances than any other team in the league this season, the report said.
