Brianna Turner disputes Fever fan defense as Kelsey Mitchell describes public scrutiny
Brianna Turner disputed Fever general manager Amber Cox’s account of fan behavior. Kelsey Mitchell separately described hostile messages and the pressure of playing in Indiana.

Brianna Turner has challenged Indiana Fever general manager Amber Cox's defense of the team's supporters, while Kelsey Mitchell described difficulties dealing with some fans during her end-of-season interview. The Associated Press reported that Cox defended the fanbase on Saturday, October 3, and Turner subsequently disputed that assessment on social media.

Watch the highlights:

Cox said no spectator identified by a player had violated the WNBA's code of conduct during the season and no fan had been removed from a game. She also said people should be held accountable for unacceptable behavior in arenas or online. Turner, a former Fever player now with the Las Vegas Aces, said complaints had repeatedly come from players both inside and outside Indiana's organization, while stressing that her criticism did not apply to every fan.

The AP placed the disagreement against the backdrop of A'ja Wilson's exchange with a spectator during Game 2 of the teams' first-round playoff series. The spectator returned to his seat after officials determined the fan code had not been breached, according to that report.

Mitchell's comments addressed a different part of the experience: playing under intense public scrutiny and receiving hostile direct messages. The Athletic, in reporting republished by Yahoo Sports, said Mitchell described the difficulty of competing for supporters who might not like her. She also discussed the attention that comes with being Caitlin Clark's teammate and the criticism directed at other Indiana players as a result.

Mitchell praised the organization but said expressing herself had not always been easy. Looking toward unrestricted free agency, she said she intended to prioritize her own career. The Athletic reported that she had not yet considered her options in depth so soon after the end of Indiana's season; her comments did not announce a decision to leave.

The guard has spent all nine of her WNBA seasons with Indiana. She also emphasized the relationships she had built there and credited the Fever with her development. Those expressions of attachment accompanied her account of the strain of fan interactions, leaving both her appreciation for the franchise and her personal concerns on record.
