Brentford Rout Tottenham 3-0 in Premier League Opener
Brentford opened their Premier League season with a 3-0 home victory over Tottenham, delivering a decisive result in Keith Andrews' second campaign as manager. The Guardian reported that Keane Lewis-Potter, Vitaly Janelt and Michael Kayode scored at the Gtech Community Stadium, while Brentford also missed a penalty and created enough opportunities to win by a wider margin.
Watch the highlights:
Lewis-Potter put Brentford ahead in the 12th minute after new midfielder Mamadou Sangare combined with Igor Thiago on the right. Sangare pulled the ball back across the area, allowing Lewis-Potter to arrive from left-back and finish from close range past Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. The move capped a strong competitive debut for Sangare following his transfer from Lens.
Brentford continued to find space against a Tottenham defence featuring three new players. Thiago headed against the crossbar, while Dango Ouattara twice reached promising positions but could not convert. Thiago later failed from the penalty spot, yet that miss did not prevent the hosts from maintaining control through their pressing and work in open play.
Janelt doubled the lead after Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall lost a challenge with Mathias Jensen. Kinsky stopped Jensen's initial shot but could not direct the ball away from danger, and Janelt converted the rebound. Bergvall and Conor Gallagher were then substituted at halftime as Tottenham attempted to change the course of the match.
Kayode added Brentford's third following a corner in the second half. Nathan Collins headed the delivery down at the far post, Sangare's subsequent effort was saved, and Kayode drove the loose ball into the roof of the net. According to The Guardian, Tottenham did not produce a notable chance until Brentford had established their three-goal advantage.
The defeat gave Roberto De Zerbi a difficult start to his first Premier League season with Tottenham. Spurs named four debutants in the starting lineup, including Andy Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi in a reshaped defence, but De Zerbi acknowledged afterward that the side lacked collective fight. Andrews, meanwhile, pointed to the trust within Brentford's established structure after a performance built on coordinated pressure and repeated chances.
