Lewis-Potter, Janelt and Kayode score as Brentford beat Tottenham 3-0
Brentford began their Premier League season with a 3-0 victory over Tottenham at the Gtech Community Stadium, with Keane Lewis-Potter, Vitaly Janelt and Michael Kayode providing the goals. The Guardian reported that the hosts pressed aggressively, created repeated openings and could have won by a wider margin.
Watch the highlights:
Lewis-Potter opened the scoring in the 12th minute after a move involving debutant Mamadou Sangare and Igor Thiago. Sangare exchanged passes with Thiago on the right before pulling the ball back, allowing Lewis-Potter to arrive from left-back and finish from close range past Antonin Kinsky.
Brentford continued to threaten after taking the lead. According to The Guardian's match report, Thiago headed against the crossbar, while Dango Ouattara twice broke through but was denied a clear finish by heavy touches. Thiago later missed a penalty, but that did not prevent Brentford from maintaining control of the match.
The second goal followed another Tottenham error. Lucas Bergvall lost a challenge with Mathias Jensen, whose subsequent shot was not pushed clear by Kinsky. Janelt reacted to the loose ball and converted the rebound, extending Brentford's advantage before Bergvall and Conor Gallagher were both substituted at half-time.
Any prospect of a Tottenham response was quickly reduced when Brentford added a third from a corner. Nathan Collins headed the delivery down at the far post, Sangare's attempt was saved by Kinsky, and Kayode drove the rebound into the roof of the net. The Guardian reported that Tottenham did not create a notable chance until Brentford were already three goals ahead.
The result gave Keith Andrews and Brentford a winning start to their second season together, while Roberto De Zerbi's first league match in charge of Tottenham ended in a heavy defeat. De Zerbi acknowledged after the game that his side lacked fight and operated as individuals, while Andrews pointed to the trust within the structure Brentford have built. For Tottenham, the opening-day loss underlined the work still required to turn a group featuring several debutants into a cohesive team.
