Breetzke century and Maharaj four wickets power South Africa past Australia

South Africa defeated Australia by 67 runs in the opening one-day international in Durban, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The Guardian reported that Matthew Breetzke’s 112 helped the hosts reach 297-8 before Australia were bowled out for 230 in 41.2 overs. The result came despite a rapid start to the chase from Australia’s opening pair.

Breetzke provided the century at the centre of South Africa’s innings after stand-in Australia captain Mitch Marsh chose to field. Marco Jansen added 75 from 59 balls, giving the hosts another substantial contribution as they set a target of 298. Jansen later played an important part in the field as well, taking the catch that ended Matt Renshaw’s innings during Australia’s decline.

Marsh, leading the side while Pat Cummins was rested, made 60 from 36 deliveries in reply. His innings included three sixes, one measured at 104 metres that cleared the dressing-room roof at Kingsmead. He and Travis Head put on 90 for the first wicket in 9.2 overs, giving Australia an opening partnership that initially kept the target within reach.

Head scored 36, Cooper Connolly made 38 and Renshaw contributed 44, but Australia could not convert those starts into the sustained partnerships needed to complete the pursuit. Marsh also fell after his fast half-century. In comments reported by The Guardian, he expressed disappointment with the result, acknowledged that South Africa had played better and pointed to his team’s failure to build enough partnerships.

South Africa’s left-arm spinners took six wickets between them, with Maharaj returning 4-20 and Bjorn Fortuin 2-34. Australia lost their final six wickets for 54 runs. Josh Inglis was dismissed attempting a reverse sweep on the eighth delivery he faced, while Renshaw’s departure came through a diving, one-handed outfield catch by Jansen off Gerald Coetzee. That wicket left the visitors 215-7.

The series moves to The Wanderers in Johannesburg on Sunday, where Australia need a win to keep the contest alive. Cummins is expected to return, according to the report. Australia have not won a bilateral series against South Africa since 2014, and the opening defeat leaves them needing to win both remaining matches to end that sequence.
