Brazilian Seamer Laura Cardoso Makes History with Record Nine-Wicket T20 Haul
The 21-year-old became the first player ever to take nine wickets in a T20 international, demolishing Lesotho for just 13 runs.

Brazil's Laura Cardoso has etched her name into cricket history by becoming the first player ever to claim nine wickets in a Twenty20 international, producing extraordinary bowling figures of 9-4 that left Lesotho reeling at 13 all out.

The 21-year-old seamer achieved the unprecedented feat during just three devastating overs, as Lesotho collapsed spectacularly while chasing Brazil's imposing total of 203 in the Kalahari Women's T20 tournament in Gaborone, Botswana.

Cardoso's remarkable performance shattered multiple records across international cricket. Her nine-wicket haul surpassed the previous T20 international record held by Bhutan's Sonam Yeshey, who took eight wickets for seven runs against Myanmar in a men's fixture last year. In women's cricket specifically, she eclipsed Indonesia's Rohmalia Rohmalia's figures of 7-0 against Mongolia in 2024.

The young bowler's assault on the record books began with a spectacular sequence of five consecutive dismissals, spanning the final three deliveries of the second over and continuing through the first two balls of the fourth over. This devastating spell left Lesotho struggling at 8-5, with their batting lineup in complete disarray.

Cardoso maintained her relentless pressure, claiming two additional wickets in the remainder of the fourth over to record her second maiden of the innings. She added another pair of dismissals in the fifth over, appearing destined for an unprecedented 10-wicket haul in T20 cricket.

However, her pursuit of perfection was denied when teammate Marianne Artur stumped Lindiwe Polaki, one of only three Lesotho batters to register a run, bringing the extraordinary collapse to a close after just 6.2 overs.

Roberta Moretti, Cricket Brasil president who witnessed every dismissal from her position at first slip, couldn't contain her enthusiasm for Cardoso's potential.

"I don't think this is the end. She's still only 21 and I believe Laura is someone who can one day play at the elite level in England and Australia," Moretti told BBC Sport, highlighting the seamer's promising trajectory.

Moretti praised not only Cardoso's natural ability but also her dedication to the sport, describing her as a product of Brazil's developing cricket infrastructure.

"For me it's a joy to see an athlete like Laura becoming the cricketer she is, with her work ethic and passion for the game. She came from one of our grassroots programmes and through all of the pathways and is one of the greatest cricketers Brazil has produced."

The record-breaking performance comes as Brazil continues their impressive campaign in the six-team Kalahari Women's T20 tournament, where they remain unbeaten after five matches. The tournament, being staged entirely in Botswana's capital, has provided an ideal platform for emerging cricket nations to showcase their developing talent.

Cardoso's achievement represents a significant milestone for Brazilian cricket, a sport still establishing its foothold in the South American nation. Her meteoric rise from grassroots programs to international record-holder exemplifies the potential for cricket's continued global expansion.

The seamer's historic figures of 9-4 will likely stand as a benchmark for bowling excellence in T20 cricket for years to come, while also serving as inspiration for aspiring cricketers across Brazil and other emerging cricket nations.

As Brazil continues their tournament campaign with perfect momentum, Cardoso's record-breaking performance has already established her as a name to watch in international cricket's evolving landscape.
