Brad Wheal retires from Hampshire and Scotland duty after recurring injuries
Hampshire and Scotland fast bowler Brad Wheal has retired from professional cricket at the age of 30 after repeated injuries, BBC Sport reported. The seamer said physical problems had left him unable to continue bowling professionally, ending a career that included four T20 World Cups and two domestic trophy wins with Hampshire.
Watch the highlights:
Wheal said he had suffered four stress fractures in his back and had recently undergone knee surgery. Explaining the decision in a statement carried by the BBC, he said his body could no longer withstand fast bowling. Although stepping away had been difficult, he said he had accepted the decision after enjoying his time playing for both Hampshire and Scotland.
His international career spanned a decade, during which he took 51 wickets in 44 appearances for Scotland. The most recent of his four T20 World Cup appearances came in India earlier this year. Wheal said representing the country had been important to him and his family, and remained a source of considerable pride as he brought his playing career to a close.
At county level, Wheal had been with Hampshire since 2015. He helped the club win the One Day Cup in 2018 and the T20 Blast in 2022, successes that formed part of a Hampshire career lasting more than a decade. His retirement ends his playing involvement with both the county and Scotland.
Reflecting on his international years, Wheal highlighted the friendships he had formed and the people with whom he had shared dressing rooms. Those relationships, he said, would be among the things he missed most. He also expressed gratitude to the teammates, coaches and support staff who had worked with him throughout his career.
Wheal thanked Scotland supporters, particularly those who had travelled internationally to follow the team, saying their backing had mattered to the players. He said he would continue following Scotland and supporting the side after retirement, while looking back fondly on a period of his life shaped by playing for the national team.
