Semenyo Who? Bournemouth March On in Style After Star Exit to Manchester City
BOURNEMOUTH — When Antoine Semenyo completed his move to Manchester City in January, few would have blamed Bournemouth for bracing themselves. The Ghanaian forward had contributed 10 goals that season, including a dramatic last-minute winner against Tottenham in his final appearance. Losing him felt like the kind of blow that could unravel a season.
Instead, something remarkable has happened. The Cherries have not tasted defeat in the 12 matches since Semenyo departed, turning what many feared would be a difficult second half into a testament to their resilience and recruitment.
The timing of Semenyo exit created an immediate problem. Bournemouth had relied heavily on his attacking output, and replacing 10 goals mid-season is no simple task. Manager Andoni Iraola turned to 19-year-old Brazilian Rayan, signed from Copenhagen for a fee that could reach 30.3 million pounds — less than half of the 65 million pounds Bournemouth received for Semenyo.
Rayan has exceeded expectations. He became only the third teenager in Premier League history to score or assist in his first three appearances, contributing two goals and an assist during that stunning introduction. While his direct involvement in goals has slowed in recent weeks, his presence has not disrupted Bournemouth attacking rhythm.
The club remarkable ability to absorb star departures extends beyond January. Last summer, Bournemouth lost Milos Kerkez to Liverpool, Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid, Illia Zabarnyi to PSG, and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to Arsenal. Only Marcos Senesi remained from their previous back four. Yet the replacements — Alex Jimenez, Adrien Truffert, James Hill, and Djordje Petrovic — have all performed at a high level, with Truffert overlapping runs becoming one of the most distinctive features of their play.
In midfield, Alex Scott has emerged as a revelation. The 22-year-old from Guernsey was called into the England squad in November and continues to push for a World Cup spot despite never making his senior debut. His winner against Tottenham showcased the composure and timing that have characterized his breakthrough season, and his recovery from significant injury setbacks has been a subplot in itself.
Bournemouth sit ninth in the Premier League with their highest points total in the club top-flight history — 56 — and appear to be getting stronger. Iraola squad has developed a winning mentality that transcends individual departures, a rare quality that suggests the Cherries ambitions may extend well beyond mere survival.
