Bournemouth's Brilliant Reboot: How the Cherries Thrived After Losing Their Star Man
AFC Bournemouth have gone 12 matches unbeaten since Antoine Semenyo departed for Manchester City, and the numbers behind their remarkable resilience are just as impressive as the results.

When Antoine Semenyo walked off the pitch after his farewell goal against Tottenham in January, few could have predicted what would follow. The Ghanaian international had just handed Bournemouth a last-minute winner, signing off in style before his £65m move to Manchester City. The Cherries had lost their best player. The campaign appeared to be entering freefall.

Twelve matches later, Bournemouth have not tasted defeat. A 12-game unbeaten run has transformed what looked like a difficult second half into one of the most encouraging stretches in the club's recent history. The question everyone wanted answered — how would Bournemouth cope without their talisman — has been responded to emphatically.

The answer begins with 19-year-old Brazilian winger Rayan, who arrived from Dynamo Kyiv just a fortnight after Semenyo's departure for a fee rising to £30.3m — less than half what the club received for their departing star. Rayan needed no time to settle. He became only the third teenager in Premier League history to score or assist in his first three appearances, notching two goals and an assist in a blistering start. While his direct goal involvement has dried up in recent weeks, his pace, trickery, and willingness to take on defenders have given Andoni Iraola's side a different dimension.

But Rayan is not the only teenager turning heads in Bournemouth's attack. The club's recruitment over recent windows has been quietly exceptional, and Sunday's victory over Arsenal only reinforced that reputation. When Milos Kerkez departed for Liverpool, Dean Huijsen moved to Real Madrid, and Illia Zabarnyi joined PSG in the same window, many feared Bournemouth's defensive spine had been stripped. Instead, new arrivals Alex Jimenez, Adrien Truffert, and Djordje Petrovic have more than filled the void. Truffert alone has made roughly twice as many overlapping runs as any other player in the league this season, and it was his deflected cross that led to the opening goal against Arsenal.

In midfield, Alex Scott continues to evolve into exactly the player Bournemouth hoped they were signing when he arrived from Bristol City. The 22-year-old, who spent roughly six months on the sidelines with injury problems following his 2023 move, was named in England's November squad and is pushing hard for a World Cup spot. His winner against Arsenal was a composed finish — collecting the ball on the edge of the box, taking a touch, and slotting past David Raya. His teammates were divided on whether it was a tap-in or a worldie. The truth likely sits somewhere between the two.

Iraola has been full of praise for Scott's recent form, calling his performance against Arsenal outstanding and highlighting the quality of his passing out from the back. He's worked a lot to be at this level, the manager said. Teammate James Hill echoed the sentiment, describing Scott as a shining light who has come on leaps and bounds throughout the season.

Bournemouth have conceded 49 goals this season — more than any team above 17th place — and that vulnerability is a genuine concern. Yet their ability to absorb pressure, transition quickly, and exploit wide areas has more than compensated. Scott himself admitted he needs to add more goals to his game, which is telling given his already impressive output of six goal involvements.

With the squad depth, youth, and tactical flexibility now on display, Bournemouth look far better equipped to handle departures than at any point in their top-flight history. Semenyo's legacy is being honoured not by mourning his absence, but by proving the club never truly needed to.
