Bournemouth latest: 'I cannot accept Leeds goal' - Iraola incensed by last-gasp equaliser
Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has voiced his utter disbelief and frustration after his side was denied a crucial three points by a last-gasp equaliser from Leeds United on Wednesday evening. The dramatic 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium leaves both clubs in precarious positions in the Premier League table.
Watch the highlights:
The decisive moment came in the 94th minute when substitute Joe Rothwell delivered a perfect cross for substitute striker to head past Neto, sending the away end into raptures and leaving Iraola visibly incensed on the touchline. After the match, the Spanish manager did not hold back in his assessment of the concession.
"I cannot accept this goal. We worked so hard for 94 minutes and to concede in such a manner is completely unacceptable," Iraola told reporters in his post-match press conference. "The boys gave everything tonight and to end like this is devastating for everyone associated with the club."
The result leaves Bournemouth 12th in the table with 42 points from 33 games, still theoretically capable of European qualification but now five points adrift of the top seven. Leeds, meanwhile, remain just two points above the relegation zone following their dramatic point earned through Longstaff's late heroics at St James' Park.
Iraola, who has transformed Bournemouth's fortunes since taking over last summer, now faces questions about his side's mental fortitude in tight matches. The Cherries have now dropped points from winning positions in three of their last five Premier League fixtures.
Bournemouth's next fixture sees them travel to Manchester United next weekend, a match Iraola described as "must-win" for his side's European aspirations. The club has not qualified for European competition since their 2019-20 season under Eddie Howe.
