Bournemouth beat 10-man Sunderland for first league win of season
Bournemouth claimed their first Premier League victory of the season with a 2-0 home win over Sunderland on Sunday, moving out of the relegation zone as the visitors suffered a fourth consecutive league defeat. According to BBC Sport's match report, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson scored at Vitality Stadium to give Marco Rose his first Premier League win as a manager.
Watch the highlights:
The hosts went ahead in the sixth minute after Evanilson got past Kevin Danso and supplied a cross for Tavernier, who headed into an unguarded net. It was Tavernier's fourth goal of the season. Sunderland's position worsened 11 minutes later when Danso pulled down Evanilson as the striker broke towards goal. Referee Craig Pawson sent off the defender for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Robin Roefs kept Sunderland in contention with saves that included two stops against Rayan, while Adam Smith missed an opportunity from a rebound. Bournemouth doubled their lead three minutes into the second half after Omar Alderete underhit a backpass. Evanilson intercepted, went around Roefs and finished to add a goal to his involvement in the opener and the dismissal.
Both clubs had started the day in the bottom three despite winning their opening two Europa League fixtures. Sunderland remained without an away league victory this season and had not won in the competition since beating Fulham on 30 August. Their seven matches have produced four points from one win and one draw, with five defeats, compared with 11 points at the same stage last season.
BBC Sport also reported that Sunderland attempted only three shots against Bournemouth, all off target, the lowest total by any Premier League team in a match this season. Citing Opta, the broadcaster said Sunderland had made five errors leading to goals, a tally no other side had exceeded. They have conceded 14 league goals while scoring six.
After the defeat, defender Nordi Mukiele told Sky Sports that Sunderland's performances had not been good enough and suggested arrogance might be a factor. Head coach Regis le Bris also criticised the display, describing the team's level as unacceptable and refusing to use a busy schedule as an excuse. The result left Sunderland second from bottom after last season's seventh-place finish and qualification for Europe.
