Boulter races into Japan Open quarter-finals with straight-sets win over Golubic
Katie Boulter beat Viktorija Golubic 6-2, 6-1 in under an hour to reach the Japan Open quarter-finals. The eighth seed won nine consecutive games during the match in Osaka.

Katie Boulter reached the Japan Open quarter-finals on Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Viktorija Golubic in Osaka, completing the match in less than an hour. According to BBC Sport, the eighth seed will next play either Croatia's Antonia Ruzic or American Kayla Day after a straight-sets win over her Swiss opponent.

Watch the highlights:

Boulter faced an early test on serve, saving a break point in the opening game. The first set remained level at 2-2 before she won nine consecutive games, a sequence that carried her through the rest of the opening set and into a commanding second-set lead. Golubic stopped that run by taking the penultimate game, but Boulter then completed the victory.

Strong wind presented a separate challenge. BBC Sport reported that Boulter was pleased with her patience and her ability to keep frustration from affecting her play. She felt her tennis improved in the second set. The result put the British player into the last eight without requiring the deciding set that Golubic would have needed to extend the contest.

The quick finish contrasted with Boulter's disrupted opening round. Sky Sports reported that she completed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Japanese wildcard Himeno Sakatsume on Tuesday after rain had interrupted play the previous day. That match required one hour and 32 minutes of playing time, with the players having to leave and return to court before it could be finished.

Sakatsume had led 2-1 when rain first stopped their match. A subsequent interruption came with Boulter ahead 6-3, 3-1, according to Sky Sports. Across the completed contest, Boulter won seven of her eight service games and converted five of nine break-point opportunities. Those figures underpinned the first of her two straight-sets victories in Osaka this week.

The successive wins follow early exits elsewhere on the Asian swing. Sky Sports noted that Boulter had departed the China Open in the second round and Wuhan in the first round, playing only three matches from September 30 before her opening-round success in Japan. Her Osaka campaign has now taken her through two rounds and secured a quarter-final place.
