Bouchier Century Powers England to Record ODI Chase Against Ireland

Maia Bouchier scored a century as England completed their highest successful chase in women's one-day internationals, beating Ireland by six wickets in the series opener at Leicester. BBC Sport reported that England reached a target of 282 with 11.5 overs unused, beginning a new phase for their batting group with an emphatic result. The hosts finished on 283-4 after Ireland had set the pace with 281-5.

Ireland made 281-5 from their 50 overs after three batters passed fifty. Captain Gaby Lewis scored 69 from 89 balls and Amy Hunter made 62 from 90, the pair sharing a 136-run second-wicket partnership. Rebecca Stokell then lifted the total with an unbeaten 54 from 48 deliveries.

Bouchier and Sophia Dunkley quickly changed the shape of the contest. They put on 143 for the first wicket, giving England both a fast start and a strong platform. Dunkley scored 73 from 61 balls, while Bouchier reached 104 before being caught at long-on with England still needing 59 runs. The BBC scorecard listed Bouchier's innings at 95 balls.

Ireland did remove four batters, with Arlene Murray taking 3-58, but could not slow the chase enough. Alice Capsey and Freya Kemp added 54 from 38 balls as England closed on the target. Capsey struck the winning boundary and finished unbeaten on 41, taking the hosts to 283-4 after 38.1 overs.

The match also reflected significant changes and absences in England's squad. Heather Knight and Tammy Beaumont have recently retired, captain Nat Sciver-Brunt was unavailable through injury, and bowlers Lauren Bell and Sophie Ecclestone were rested. Ireland's total had appeared competitive at the interval, particularly after England struggled to create chances during the middle overs, but the chase was controlled from the opening partnership onward.

The six-wicket victory gave England a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The second ODI is scheduled for Thursday at Derby, where Ireland will seek a response after their productive batting effort was overtaken with almost 12 overs remaining.
