Borussia Dortmund Sign Ethan Nwaneri on Season-Long Loan

Borussia Dortmund have signed Arsenal midfielder Ethan Nwaneri on a season-long loan, according to BBC Sport. The 19-year-old moves to the Bundesliga after spending the second half of last season on loan at Marseille, extending a period away from Arsenal designed to give him more opportunities at senior level.

The agreement was reached after Dortmund's new signing Giannis Konstantelias suffered what BBC Sport described as a significant knee injury. Konstantelias was hurt during Dortmund's 2-0 victory over Hamburg on Saturday, leaving the German club seeking an additional midfield option before the transfer window closed.

Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken said the club needed to strengthen its squad at short notice because Konstantelias faces an extended absence. Ricken described Nwaneri as a technically gifted midfielder and said the loan represented Dortmund's preferred sporting solution. BBC Sport also reported that Dortmund had tried to sign the Arsenal academy graduate last summer.

Nwaneri's first-team opportunities at Arsenal had become limited following the arrivals of Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze. He then joined Marseille for the second half of last season and made 11 appearances in all competitions for the French club. His latest loan gives him another chance to pursue regular playing time outside north London.

BBC Sport reported last month that Arsenal intended to prioritise loan proposals for Nwaneri and did not want to sell him. Clubs in both the Premier League and elsewhere in Europe showed interest during the window before Dortmund completed the deal. Arsenal's range of attacking options contributed to the view at the club that Nwaneri would benefit from increased playing time elsewhere.

The move was one of two confirmed departures involving Arsenal midfielders in the report. Fabio Vieira joined Hamburg permanently after spending last season on loan with the Bundesliga club. The 26-year-old moved to Arsenal from Porto in 2022 for £34.2 million and made 49 appearances for the London side before completing his transfer to Hamburg.
