Booth Double Leaves Sussex 99-3 on Rain-Shortened Edgbaston Opener
Michael Booth took two wickets in 13 balls as Sussex closed a rain-shortened first day on 99-3 against Warwickshire. Only 30.3 overs were possible at Edgbaston.

Michael Booth's two-wicket burst brought Warwickshire back into contention before rain ended a shortened opening day against Sussex at Edgbaston. Sussex closed on 99-3 from 30.3 overs in their County Championship Division One match, with Warwickshire still waiting to bat.

Watch the highlights:

The ECB Reporters' Network, in a report carried by BBC Sport, said rain wiped out the final session after weather had already limited play. Sussex had been sent in and reached lunch at 50-1, then added another 49 runs in the afternoon before the rain returned.

Chris Woakes provided Warwickshire's first breakthrough with his 10th delivery. Daniel Hughes drove at the ball and Ed Barnard held a sharp catch at gully. The wicket was Woakes' 379th in first-class cricket for Warwickshire, and his new-ball spell kept Sussex under pressure during the morning session.

Tom Haines and Tom Clark steadied Sussex with a second-wicket partnership of 69. Conditions became easier for batting when the sun appeared during the afternoon, and Haines collected nine fours on his way to 49. Clark made 30 as the pair moved their side into a stronger position.

The balance shifted when Booth entered the attack as cloud cover returned. Haines was caught by Rob Yates at second slip from Booth's second ball. Eleven deliveries later, Booth won an lbw decision against Clark, giving him figures of 2-5 and leaving Sussex three wickets down before the weather intervened again.

Sussex ended the day 99 runs ahead with seven first-innings wickets remaining, while Warwickshire collected one point and Sussex none from the limited play. Both teams entered the match in the title chase, and the report said a victory would move either side among the leading contenders. With no further play possible after the final interruption, the contest moved to day two with neither team holding a decisive advantage.
