Rain threatened to prevent any action on Monday before the teams managed a 30-over session. The Guardian's live report recorded South Africa finishing their 43rd over at stumps, with Mulder surviving Mitchell Starc's final over. After their defeat in the first Test, the hosts were again left relying on the remaining batters to build a competitive first-innings total.
Boland struck early once play resumed, adding to the two wickets he had taken on the opening day. Debutant Marques Ackerman edged behind to Alex Carey for six, leaving South Africa 25-3. According to BBC Sport, Ackerman was opening against the red ball for the first time in his career, having been brought into the side as one of two batting changes from the first Test.
The other incoming batter, Matthew Breetzke, also departed cheaply. He made four from 17 deliveries before edging Starc to Carey while attempting a back-foot shot through the covers. South Africa were 40-4. Breetzke had been selected following his white-ball performances, with Tristan Stubbs making way after his dismissals in the opening match of the series.
Ryan Rickelton, moved from opener to number six and given the wicketkeeping role, contributed 31 before becoming Boland's fourth victim. He had earlier been struck on the body during a spell of short bowling from Pat Cummins and dropped by Marnus Labuschagne on 26. Matt Renshaw eventually held a low, one-handed catch at first slip to remove him, leaving the hosts 92-5.
Boland ended the day with figures of 4-31 after replacing Nathan Lyon in Australia's side. BBC Sport reported that Josh Hazlewood remained at the team hotel because of illness. Bavuma nevertheless carried his innings through to the close, leaving South Africa with five wickets in hand and three scheduled days remaining in the Test.
