Boland double strike leaves South Africa 20 for two on rain-hit opening day
Scott Boland took two wickets in consecutive deliveries as South Africa closed on 20 for two on a rain-disrupted opening day of the second Test against Australia in Gqeberha on Sunday. Only 12.2 overs were possible at St George's Park, leaving the hosts with an early rebuilding task rather than the opportunity to establish a substantial first-innings total.
Watch the highlights:
According to the Daily Dispatch's match report, Aiden Markram was dismissed for 11 and David Bedingham fell without scoring, reducing South Africa to 12 for two. Captain Temba Bavuma and debutant Marques Ackerman then remained together until the weather intervened again. Ackerman finished unbeaten on five, with Bavuma on four, as persistent showers prevented any further play.
Cricket.com.au reported that the appearance marked Boland's first competitive red-ball match since the Sheffield Shield final in March. His immediate impact followed Australia's decision to select him in place of Nathan Lyon. The change gave captain Pat Cummins an all-seam attack, with Boland joining Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood among the specialist fast bowlers available to support the skipper.
The selection was unusual even against the background of Lyon's recent omissions. Cricket.com.au's team report noted that the off-spinner had previously been left out for pink-ball Tests in Jamaica and at the Gabba, but had not been omitted from a daytime Test while fully fit since the 2013 Ashes. Cummins won the toss and chose to bowl, while Australia retained the batting unit used in Durban.
Australia entered the match with a 1-0 advantage in the three-Test series following a 214-run victory in the opener. ABC's reporting before the second Test highlighted South Africa's need to turn starts into longer innings: Markram was their only batter to pass 50 in Durban, while seven others made scores between 30 and 49 across the two innings.
The hosts now face that same challenge with two wickets already gone and little cricket completed. The Daily Dispatch reported that further poor weather was forecast for the second day, although that remained a forecast rather than a confirmed loss of playing time. Bavuma and Ackerman will resume South Africa's innings when conditions allow.
