Boland double leaves South Africa 20-2 before rain halts second Test
Scott Boland removed Aiden Markram and David Bedingham in successive deliveries before rain stopped play in Gqeberha. Australia recalled him in place of Nathan Lyon for the second Test.

Scott Boland took two wickets in consecutive deliveries as Australia reduced South Africa to 20-2 before another rain interruption on the opening day of the second Test in Gqeberha on Sunday. The BBC scorecard showed play suspended after 12.2 overs at St George's Park, with Boland holding figures of 2-5. The match was still in progress, with South Africa in their first innings.

Watch the highlights:

According to ABC Sport's live reporting, Boland bowled Aiden Markram as the opener attempted a drive, then had David Bedingham caught behind by Alex Carey from the next delivery. Captain Temba Bavuma survived the hat-trick ball when an inside edge struck his pad. The two dismissals came in the ninth over, giving Australia an early breakthrough after the opening partnership had remained intact against the new ball.

Markram made 11 and Bedingham was dismissed without scoring. Debutant opener Marques Ackerman was unbeaten on five and Bavuma on four at the stoppage, according to the BBC scorecard. Josh Hazlewood had conceded only three runs from five overs, while Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins had also bowled. ABC reported that rain returned during Boland's fourth over and the players left the field, with covers subsequently brought on.

Boland's selection was Australia's only change from the team that won the first Test in Durban by 214 runs. Cricket Australia reported that Nathan Lyon was left out as the tourists selected an all-pace attack and Cummins chose to field after winning the toss. Australia entered the match leading the three-Test series 1-0, with their batting line-up unchanged from the opening victory.

South Africa made three changes, bringing in Ackerman, Matthew Breetzke and Kagiso Rabada in place of Tristan Stubbs, Kyle Verreynne and Keshav Maharaj. Ryan Rickelton took over as wicketkeeper and moved to number six, while Simon Harmer retained his place as the specialist spinner, Cricket Australia reported. Ackerman was asked to open on his Test debut despite not previously opening in first-class cricket.

The weather left both sides waiting to resume after a short passage of play in which Boland had removed two of South Africa's top three. ABC's subsequent updates reported continuing rain and covers remaining in place. No result had been reached at the time of this report.
