Black Ferns overpower Wallaroos 66-19 to retain O'Reilly Cup
New Zealand retained the O'Reilly Cup with a 66-19 victory over Australia in a women's rugby Test at Go Media Stadium in Auckland on Saturday. The Guardian reported that the Black Ferns scored four unanswered tries at the start of a match that marked the Wallaroos' 100th Test. Australia had been seeking its first win over New Zealand since the teams first met in 1994.
Watch the highlights:
The Black Ferns established control before Australia found a response late in the opening half. After New Zealand lock Maama Mo'onia Vaipulu received a yellow card, Wallaroos fly-half Waiaria Ellis sent a lofted pass to winger Desiree Miller for Australia's first try. That score reduced New Zealand's advantage to 26-7 at halftime.
New Zealand pulled away again after the interval, crossing for five consecutive tries as Australian errors, penalties and defensive problems mounted. Teenage debutant Shyrah Tuliau-Tua'a was among the scorers, touching down from a charge-down in the 63rd minute. Australia later added two tries, with Ellis beating the defense after a dummy and replacement Brittany Merlo finishing from a rolling maul with seven minutes remaining.
Black Ferns debutant Amarante Sititi scored the final try to complete the 66-19 result. The win secured the trophy for New Zealand and continued a rivalry in which Australia has yet to record a victory. It also left the Wallaroos with a heavy defeat on a landmark occasion for the national team.
Maddison Levi made her Wallaroos debut after building her reputation in rugby sevens. According to The Guardian's report, she entered in the 51st minute, reclaimed possession several times and collected all five restarts directed toward her. Levi was unable to turn those moments into a decisive attacking impact. Pia Tapsell also debuted for Australia, while Wallaroos captain Siokapesi Palu Sekona acknowledged that the team was unhappy with its performance and referred to changes involving the coaching staff and playing personnel.
Australia's next assignment is the WXV Global Series in September. The Wallaroos are scheduled to face reigning world champions England, world No. 4 France and seventh-ranked Scotland. Those matches will offer an immediate test of how the team responds after New Zealand's dominant display in Auckland.
