Birmingham Fight Back Twice to Hold Wolves in Four-Goal Derby

Birmingham City came from behind twice to secure a 2-2 Championship draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers at St Andrew's on Sunday. The Guardian reported that the result extended Birmingham's unbeaten start to the league season and prevented their recently relegated neighbours from returning to the automatic promotion positions.

Wolves made a rapid start through Fer López, who scored in the third minute. Raúl Jiménez moved the ball to Rodrigo Gomes during the buildup, and Gomes delivered the cross from which López finished at the near post for his third goal of the season. Gomes then had an opportunity to double the visitors' advantage in the 19th minute, but Birmingham goalkeeper James Beadle saved his attempted dink.

Jay Stansfield brought Birmingham level after collecting a pass from Patrick Roberts and driving his finish into the near top corner. The Guardian reported that Stansfield appeared to handle the ball in the move, but the goal stood. Wolves answered shortly after the half-hour mark when Czechia captain Ladislav Krejci met a Hugo Bueno corner with a powerful header after André had flicked it on.

Birmingham were level again before half-time through an extraordinary own goal. With no opponent applying pressure, Jackson Tchatchoua tried to turn Phil Neumann's long diagonal pass back toward goalkeeper José Sá. His attempted return instead looped over and beyond Sá, making the score 2-2.

Both teams threatened after the interval. Jiménez struck the crossbar for Wolves, while Neumann later headed against the same woodwork for Birmingham. Each side also appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty, with Jiménez going down under a challenge from Bright Osayi-Samuel in the first half and August Priske falling under André's challenge in the second.

Wolves had the clearest late chance in the 87th minute. López won possession from Demarai Gray and squared the ball to Adam Armstrong with the goalkeeper committed, but Armstrong lifted his shot over the empty goal from about 10 yards. Birmingham then nearly claimed all three points when Marvin Ducksch sent a free-kick toward the top corner, only for Sá to tip it away and preserve the draw.
