Birmingham take Championship lead as Cardiff overturn 4-1 deficit to beat Burnley
Birmingham moved to the top of the Championship with a 2-1 victory over Swansea on Saturday, while Cardiff recovered from a three-goal deficit to beat Burnley 5-4. According to the Guardian's roundup, Jay Stansfield supplied both Birmingham goals, including the winner three minutes from the end, on an afternoon when Middlesbrough and Wolves were held to draws.
Watch the highlights:
Birmingham goalkeeper Ryan Allsop first kept out an early Ross Stewart penalty, awarded after Alex Cochrane was judged to have pushed Jenson Seelt. Swansea then lost Marko Stamenic to a red card in the 26th minute for a high challenge on Ethan Laird. Stansfield's first-half goal was cancelled out by a Christoph Klarer own goal before the Birmingham forward struck again to secure the points.
Cardiff's victory came after another match of sharply changing fortunes in the Welsh capital. Having surrendered a 3-0 lead against West Ham in midweek, Cardiff this time found themselves chasing Burnley. Andreas Hountondji and Marcus Edwards put the visitors two goals ahead before Rubin Colwill's effort went in off Ollie Tanner. Kristian Bielik then scored for Burnley, and an Alex Robertson own goal left Cardiff trailing 4-1.
Substitute Yousef Salech began the recovery in the 65th minute, less than two minutes after entering the game. Jack Moylan converted a penalty with 15 minutes remaining, and Salech headed an equaliser in the 82nd minute. Robertson completed the turnaround with a curling shot from 30 yards four minutes into added time, giving Cardiff four goals from the 65th minute onwards and leaving Burnley without a point from the nine-goal contest.
Elsewhere in the race at the top, Middlesbrough drew 0-0 at Watford, where goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia helped the home side record a third successive home clean sheet. Wolves drew 1-1 at Wrexham after Adam Armstrong's 25th-minute opener was answered by Lewis O'Brien two minutes later. Wolves extended their unbeaten sequence to six matches but missed the opportunity to go top.
Stoke also came from behind, beating Portsmouth 2-1 through Jack McGlynn and Ben Wilmot after Tyrese Shade's early opener. It was Stoke's fifth successive away victory, a run manager Mark Robins said the club had not achieved since 1947. West Ham, meanwhile, lost 2-1 at Blackburn, leaving Scott Parker still seeking his first win as their manager.
