Bin Naeem Hits 71 on Derbyshire Debut at Bristol

Mohammed Bin Naeem scored 71 on his Derbyshire debut to lead a composed reply against Gloucestershire on the second day of their County Championship Division Two match in Bristol. Derbyshire closed on 162-2, 75 runs behind the hosts' first-innings total of 237.

BBC Sport, in a report supplied by the ECB Reporters' Network, said the 20-year-old faced 119 balls and shared partnerships of 70 with Harry Came and 91 with Matthew Montgomery. His innings made him the first Derbyshire player to score a half-century on debut since Tony Borrington made 70 against Essex at Ilford in 1971.

Gloucestershire had resumed on 62-5 after collapsing to 37-5 on the opening day. Nine overs were lost to rain before Ben Aitchison found Ed Middleton's outside edge, with the batter caught behind for 17. James Bracey, who was dropped on 39 from an inside edge off Shoaib Bashir, then carried the recovery and reached 50 from 90 deliveries.

Bracey went on to make 113 from 166 balls, an innings containing 12 fours and lasting four hours. It was his fourth century of the season and the 20th of his first-class career. He added 49 with Sai Kishore and 79 with Will Williams before edging Martin Andersson to wicketkeeper Brooke Guest at 207-8. Williams contributed 42 from 106 balls as Gloucestershire advanced to 237.

Brett Randell finished with 5-41 from 17.2 overs for Derbyshire. The New Zealand bowler removed Kishore for 22, then returned to dismiss Matt Taylor and Williams, who edged to first slip after the new ball was taken. Those wickets ended a lower-order recovery that had lifted Gloucestershire from their difficult first-day position.

Came and Bin Naeem negotiated the new-ball spells from Williams and loan signing James Hayes before Gloucestershire introduced slow left-arm bowler Kishore in the 12th over. Williams trapped Came lbw for 43, seven short of a half-century. Bin Naeem reached 50 from 95 balls, including six fours and a six, before Kishore had him caught behind in the penultimate over. Montgomery remained unbeaten on 40 at stumps, leaving Derbyshire with eight first-innings wickets in hand.
