Bin Naeem Debut Fifty Puts Derbyshire in Strong Position at Bristol

Mohammed Bin Naeem marked his Derbyshire debut with 71 as the visitors closed day two on 162-2 against Gloucestershire in Bristol, 75 runs behind the hosts’ first-innings 237. The 20-year-old’s composed half-century put Derbyshire in a strong position at the halfway point of the County Championship Division Two match, according to a report supplied by the ECB Reporters’ Network and published by BBC Sport.

Bin Naeem faced 119 balls and shared two substantial partnerships, adding 70 with Harry Came for the first wicket and 91 with Matthew Montgomery for the second. Came made 43, while Montgomery reached stumps unbeaten on 40. Bin Naeem was dismissed in the penultimate over when Sai Kishore had him caught behind.

His innings carried a notable historical distinction for Derbyshire. After reaching 50 from 95 deliveries with six fours and a six, Bin Naeem became the county’s first player to score a half-century on debut since Tony Borrington made 70 against Essex at Ilford in 1971. Gloucestershire had turned to Kishore in the 12th over, but the opening pair navigated the slow left-armer cautiously before Will Williams trapped Came leg before wicket.

Earlier, James Bracey drove Gloucestershire’s recovery from a precarious 37-5 on day one. Resuming at 62-5 after nine overs were lost to rain, the hosts reached 237 behind Bracey’s 113. His 20th first-class century came from an innings lasting four hours and 166 balls, with 12 fours.

Bracey received important lower-order support. He added 43 with Ed Middleton, 49 with Kishore and 79 with Williams for the sixth, seventh and eighth wickets. Williams contributed 42 from 106 balls before edging to first slip, while Bracey’s innings ended when he edged Martin Andersson to wicketkeeper Brooke Guest at 207-8.

Brett Randell led Derbyshire’s bowling effort with 5-41 from 17.2 overs. He removed Kishore before returning to dismiss Matt Taylor and Williams, completing his five-wicket haul as Gloucestershire’s innings ended. Bracey had earlier been dropped on 39 off Shoaib Bashir, an opportunity he converted into his fourth century of the season.

Derbyshire collected three points from the match to Gloucestershire’s none by stumps. With only two wickets down and the pitch expected to offer more help to spin over the final two days, the visitors will resume with a realistic chance of moving beyond Gloucestershire’s total and establishing a first-innings lead.
