Billy Sharp reverses retirement to join AFC Rushden & Diamonds
Billy Sharp has signed for eighth-tier AFC Rushden & Diamonds after announcing his retirement in October. The former Sheffield United captain could feature against Burton Albion in the FA Cup.

Billy Sharp has returned to football by signing for AFC Rushden & Diamonds, reversing the retirement he announced last month. Reuters reported that the eighth-tier club confirmed the 40-year-old former Sheffield United captain's arrival on Sunday, bringing him back to the area where he scored his first professional goals more than two decades ago.

Watch the highlights:

The signing comes with Diamonds preparing for their first appearance in the FA Cup first round proper. BBC Sport reported that Sharp has joined following James Clifton's suspension, with the club due to visit Burton Albion on Saturday for a 15:00 GMT kick-off. Sharp's participation remains conditional: the BBC said an appearance would be the 814th of his career.

His connection with Rushden dates to a loan from Sheffield United in 2005. During that spell, Sharp scored nine times in 16 appearances for the original Rushden & Diamonds, according to the BBC. Reuters reported that his first professional goal came during the loan and that his career total stands at 299.

The distinction between the two Rushden clubs is important to the return. The original club entered liquidation in 2011 following financial difficulties, and supporters subsequently established AFC Rushden & Diamonds as its successor, Reuters reported. Sharp is therefore joining the supporter-founded club rather than the same organisation he represented at the beginning of his playing career.

The Doncaster Free Press reported that Sharp announced his retirement on 11 October, following the end of his latest spell at Doncaster Rovers. His final match for Rovers included a hat-trick against Peterborough United on the last day of the 2025-26 League One season. Across four spells with Doncaster, he scored 71 goals, the newspaper reported.

Sharp's last season at Doncaster brought 14 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions, according to BBC Sport. His wider career also included three promotions with Sheffield United, two of them to the Premier League, Reuters reported. For Diamonds, his arrival follows a fourth qualifying-round victory over Morecambe that secured their first-round place, according to the Doncaster Free Press.
