Billy Root to retire at season’s end as Glamorgan lose another senior batter

Billy Root will retire from top-flight cricket at the end of the 2026 season, BBC Sport reported, adding another experienced name to Glamorgan’s departing players. The 34-year-old batter follows Colin Ingram in announcing his retirement, with both players approaching the end of long spells with the Welsh county.

Root moved from Nottinghamshire to Glamorgan in 2019 and has scored almost 5,000 runs for the club, according to the BBC’s retirement report. His innings have included seven centuries and a double hundred at Northampton. The younger brother of England batter Joe Root also contributed to Glamorgan’s One-Day Cup successes in 2021 and 2024.

Director of cricket Mark Wallace praised Root’s contribution over seven seasons, highlighting his reliability, professionalism and performances under pressure. In comments carried by BBC Sport, Wallace also stressed the regard in which team-mates and staff held the batter and his importance to the county’s white-ball achievements. Root has played two County Championship Division One matches this season.

His final campaign followed a one-year contract extension keeping him at Sophia Gardens through 2026. Reporting on that agreement, Sportin Wales said Root had made 67 first-class and 44 List A appearances for Glamorgan at that point. It also reported that his Championship opportunities had diminished in 2025 as head coach Richard Dawson gave younger batters, including Asa Tribe and Ben Kellaway, opportunities in the side.

Ingram’s departure adds to the loss of experience, although the South African will remain with Glamorgan as a coach. BBC Sport reported that the 41-year-old would finish playing after 11 seasons with the county. He was Glamorgan’s leading Championship run-scorer during their promotion-winning 2025 campaign and has made 31 centuries for the club across the three formats.

The retirements come in a season that brought Glamorgan back to the Championship’s top division for the first time in 21 years, as Sportin Wales noted when Root renewed his contract. While Root’s departure ends his playing contribution, Ingram’s move into coaching will keep one of the county’s senior batters involved with its players beyond the boundary.
