Billy Loughnane becomes youngest Flat champion jockey in more than a century
Billy Loughnane has secured the Flat jockeys' championship at 20, becoming the youngest champion in more than a century, The Guardian reported. He is due to receive official recognition at Ascot on Saturday after pulling clear of defending champion Oisin Murphy during a season that has also brought a 2,000 Guineas victory.
Watch the highlights:
Loughnane moved ahead of Murphy in mid-July after a slow opening to the championship in May, and subsequently increased his advantage. According to The Guardian, he is the only jockey to have reached 150 victories during the championship period, which runs from early May to mid-October. Across the full calendar year, his total already exceeds 220 wins.
The title comes four years after Loughnane made his first racecourse appearance as a 16-year-old apprentice at Wolverhampton in October 2022. His age places the achievement ahead of several celebrated predecessors: Pat Eddery won his first championship at 22, Frankie Dettori at 23 and Lester Piggott at 24. Loughnane told The Guardian that becoming champion had been his ambition from the beginning.
He credited the people around him for helping turn that ambition into a title. His father, trainer Mark Loughnane, provided his earliest rides and winners, while George Boughey has become his main employer. Loughnane also highlighted the influence of agent Tony Hind. Asked to identify his most satisfying victory of 2026, he chose Bow Echo's success in the 2,000 Guineas in May, pointing to the preparation behind the performance and how closely the race followed the team's plan.
The workload behind the championship has included early-morning riding, gym sessions and travel to meetings throughout the week. Loughnane described days beginning at 5.30am, followed by work on between two and eight horses before racing commitments later in the day. The Guardian reported that he had taken only six days away from race-riding since the start of August.
With the championship secured, Loughnane said his next target was Sir Gordon Richards' record of 269 Flat winners in a calendar year, set in 1947. He intends to continue riding through the remainder of the year to see how close he can get. For 2027, his stated priorities include defending the title and increasing his opportunities in Group One races.
