Bezzecchi leads Aprilia podium sweep as Martin regains MotoGP points lead
Marco Bezzecchi won the Indonesian Grand Prix on Sunday as Aprilia riders filled all three podium positions and Jorge Martin reclaimed the MotoGP championship lead. BBC Sport reported that Martin finished third at Mandalika, behind Bezzecchi and Raul Fernandez, while title rival Marc Marquez came home sixth for Ducati.
Watch the highlights:
The result leaves Martin on 355 points, two ahead of Marquez on 353. Bezzecchi is third with 309, putting him 46 points behind the leader with five grands prix remaining in the 2026 season. Martin, the 2024 world champion, therefore leaves Indonesia back at the top after losing that position a day earlier.
Bezzecchi made the decisive pass on Fernandez on lap 19, with nine laps remaining. Fernandez had started from pole position, and the two riders moved clear of the pursuing group after getting through the opening corner. The Spaniard initially appeared in control, but his pace faded before Bezzecchi overtook him and pulled away in the heat at Mandalika International Circuit.
For both riders, the Sunday result followed a much less successful sprint race. Bezzecchi and Fernandez had collided and crashed out on Saturday. Their return to the front in the grand prix ended with the Italian taking victory and Fernandez holding second, turning the weekend's two races into sharply contrasting outcomes for the pair.
Fernandez also raced with a fractured index finger following the sprint incident. According to BBC Sport, he used his middle finger to brake throughout Sunday's race. The Trackhouse rider still finished ahead of Martin, joining Aprilia's two factory riders on a podium occupied entirely by competitors using the Italian manufacturer's machinery.
Marquez had won Saturday's sprint, a result that moved him into the championship lead for the first time this season. His sixth place in the grand prix, three positions behind Martin, meant that advantage did not survive the weekend. The lead changed hands across the two races in Indonesia.
The championship now heads to Phillip Island for the Australian Grand Prix in two weeks. Martin takes a narrow points advantage into that meeting, with Marquez second and Indonesian race winner Bezzecchi completing the leading three in the standings.
