Bess and Kuldeep Put Yorkshire in Command Against Essex

Dom Bess delivered with bat and ball as Yorkshire took control of their County Championship Division One match against Essex at Headingley. Bess finished unbeaten on 80 as Yorkshire reached 390 in their first innings, then took 3-36 with his off-spin as Essex closed the second day on 137-7, still 253 runs behind. Yorkshire resumed on 241-6 and reached 335-7 by lunch. George Hill was caught and bowled by Shane Snater for 40, but Bess and Kuldeep Yadav then added 83 for the eighth wicket. Bess reached his half-century from 100 balls before continuing to 80 not out, while Kuldeep contributed 36 before returning a catch to Matt Critchley.

Critchley finished with 5-85 after taking the final three Yorkshire wickets. Essex's attack was weakened when Jamie Porter pulled up during his run-up near the end of his 21st over and left the field before lunch. Yorkshire collected two batting bonus points, while Essex earned two bowling points.

Kuldeep made an immediate impact when Essex began their reply. The India left-arm wrist-spinner trapped Paul Walter lbw with his fourth delivery and bowled Tom Westley in his second over, leaving the visitors 15-2 at tea. Charlie Allison briefly countered by hitting Kuldeep for six, but he was later lbw to the same bowler for 15. Hill then dismissed Critchley lbw as Essex slipped to 32-4.

Dean Elgar and Luc Benkenstein added 34 to steady the innings, but Bess removed both batters lbw. He then bowled Snater to reduce Essex to 97-7. Elgar made 34, while on-loan Lancashire wicketkeeper-batter George Bell remained unbeaten on 42 and helped Essex reach the close without another wicket falling.

Essex need another 104 runs to avoid the follow-on when play resumes. Yorkshire entered the match with both teams positioned just above the Division One relegation zone, adding importance to the remaining two days. Bess and Kuldeep have already shaped the contest through their partnership and six combined wickets, leaving Essex with substantial work required to regain parity.
