Ben Stokes Dismisses McCullum Rift Reports, Vows Different Approach After Ashes Setback
England Test captain Ben Stokes has publicly addressed speculation about tensions between himself and head coach Brendon McCullum, dismissing suggestions of a rift and promising a revised approach as England looks to rebound from a disappointing Ashes campaign.
In a video released by the England and Wales Cricket Board, Stokes emphasised that total agreement between himself and McCullum at all times would be unhealthy. The pair, who have worked together for three and a half years, will continue their partnership but acknowledge things will look different this summer.
"We agree 95% of the time on things, but those 5% things that we might have different views on, we talk about it between each other and then we end up getting to the place where we want to get to," Stokes said. "Agreeing on every single thing, that is just impossible. Saying we weren't aligned, I think, is a massive overstatement."
The 34-year-old all-rounder maintained his public backing for McCullum following England's 4-1 loss in the winter series, despite reports of internal criticism during the ECB's review process. McCullum retained his position, though the governing body has signalled expectations for greater professionalism from the team.
The tension between the two was evident during the series. At 2-0 down, Stokes shifted strategy dramatically, asking batsmen to place a higher value on their wickets rather than continuing the aggressive approach that had defined England's results under McCullum. The change led to a confusing performance during the series-sealing defeat in Adelaide, where conditions typically suited England's attacking style were met with unusual caution. McCullum was understood to be privately frustrated by the philosophical shift but chose not to question his captain publicly.
Stokes is expected to begin his season with Durham when they face Worcestershire from 8 May. He underwent surgery on a broken cheekbone in February after being struck by a stray ball during a net session.
Looking ahead to a packed schedule that includes Tests against New Zealand and Pakistan this summer, followed by tours to South Africa and Bangladesh next winter and a one-off match in Melbourne celebrating the 150th anniversary of Test cricket, Stokes remains confident in the partnership.
"The main point of me and Brendon is our alignment towards winning things and making this team as good as they can be," he added. "It might just look a little bit different now to how that operates on the back of four years working together. We still want to win everything, and we still want to give the guys the best chance that they possibly can of being as good as they can be."
