Ben Stokes Insists He and Brendon McCullum Remain United Despite Ashes setback
Ben Stokes has dismissed reports of a fracture between himself and England head coach Brendon McCullum, insisting the famous partnership that reshaped English Test cricket remains firmly intact. The England captain, speaking in an ECB interview, said suggestions of a significant disagreement were wide of the mark.
Saying we werent aligned, I think, is a massive overstatement, Stokes said. When youre in a position of leadership along with someone else, if anyone thinks that youre always going to agree on everything, then its just impossible.
The pair, who coined the term Bazball for their aggressive, positive approach to Test cricket when they took charge in 2022, found themselves pulling in seemingly different directions during the recent Ashes series in Australia. Stokes increasingly adopted a combative, grinding style with the bat as the series wore on, delivering frank assessments to his squad. McCullum, by contrast, maintained his philosophy of ultra-attacking cricket regardless of circumstances.
The divergent approaches fueled talk of tension, with a post-series review said to have flagged concerns. But Rob Key, the managing director of mens cricket, previously rubbished suggestions of a bust-up, and now Stokes has added his voice to those playing down the significance of any disagreement.
To me, that isnt a healthy environment for sport, in particular. You need debate. You need discussions. Then you end up getting to the place you both want to end up getting to, Stokes explained. As similar as me and Brendon are, were also dissimilar in other areas as well. We agree 95 per cent of the time on things, but those five per cent things that we might have different views on, we talk about it between each other and then we end up getting to the place where we want to get to.
England lost the Ashes 4-1, a humbling result on foreign soil that has forced a period of reflection ahead of a packed home summer. With series against New Zealand and Pakistan on the horizon and the 2027 Ashes returning to these shores, Stokes is eager to draw a line under the speculation and refocus on the job at hand.
The main point of me and Brendon is our alignment towards winning things and making this team as good as they can be, he said. That has always been the thing since we started. It might just look a little bit different now to how that operates on the back of four years working together.
Stokes is currently sidelined with a facial injury sustained during pre-season training with Durham but remains on track to lead England out for the first Test of the summer at Lords on 4 June.
