Ben Foakes Century Secures Surrey Draw Against Essex

Ben Foakes made an unbeaten 120 to steer Surrey to a County Championship draw against Essex at Chelmsford on Sunday. The ECB Reporters' Network, in a report carried by BBC Sport, said the wicketkeeper-batter occupied the crease for nearly five hours as Surrey reached 298-8 in their second innings after beginning the final day in serious difficulty.

Surrey resumed on 51-4, still 45 runs short of making Essex bat again after conceding a 96-run first-innings deficit. A fifth defeat of the season remained possible, but Foakes stayed through to the handshake with his innings spanning 226 balls. The draw gave Essex 12 points and Surrey 11.

The visitors initially concentrated on survival. Foakes struck the first delivery of the morning for four, but a later stretch went 35 balls without a run off the bat. Simon Harmer ended Josh Blake's 70-ball resistance with a caught-behind dismissal, and Jamie Porter then had Mahipal Lomror caught behind while Surrey were still four runs away from eliminating the deficit.

Foakes received important support from Adam Thomas in a seventh-wicket partnership of 52. Surrey needed 47 overs to move level with Essex's first-innings advantage, after which Thomas increased the scoring rate. His innings ended when he top-edged an attempted hook from Zaman Akhter into wicketkeeper Michael Pepper's gloves.

Tom Lawes then joined Foakes for a 104-run eighth-wicket stand that lasted 28 overs. Lawes kept the scoreboard moving while limiting risk before Sam Cook bowled him with the fourth delivery after tea. Foakes reached his half-century from 121 balls and completed his hundred from 205, later striking Harmer for six over midwicket.

Surrey's 298-8 followed their first-innings 183 and Essex's 279, which had been built around Dean Elgar's 113. Rahul Chahar took 6-80 for Surrey in that innings, while Harmer finished with 3-92 in Surrey's second. Foakes' resistance ensured Surrey avoided defeat and, according to the report, kept the defending county out of the bottom two in Division One.
