Ben Chilwell Seals Crystal Palace Comeback at Fulham

Crystal Palace recovered from two deficits to beat Fulham 3-2 at Craven Cottage, with substitute Ben Chilwell volleying the decisive goal. The Guardian reported that the result gave Palace manager Pierre Sage his first victory in charge and left Fulham without a point after three Premier League matches.

Fulham went ahead when Adam Wharton failed to clear Oscar Bobb’s cross and the ball reached Josh King, whose shot took a major deflection before beating Dean Henderson. Palace thought they had responded almost immediately, but Daichi Kamada’s finish from a Yéremy Pino cross was ruled out because Kamada had strayed narrowly offside.

The hosts then threatened to extend their advantage, forcing Henderson to save Timothy Castagne’s close-range effort. Instead, Palace drew level when Eddie Nketiah set up Tyrick Mitchell, who beat Bernd Leno at the near post. Fulham restored their lead before halftime after King’s dummy opened space for him to enter the penalty area and send in a cross.

Henderson kept Jaydee Canvot from turning that delivery into his own net, but César Palacios followed up to score into the empty goal. It was Palacios’s first Fulham goal, and it put Alvaro Arbeloa’s side back in front after Palace had briefly recovered from their difficult start.

Mitchell supplied Palace’s second equaliser in unusual fashion. His first attempt was cleared by Gonzalo García, but Mitchell sent the ball back toward goal while falling, and García missed his attempted intervention as it crossed the line. Palace then completed the comeback when Chilwell volleyed in after Anan Khalaili’s shot had been blocked. Ryan Sessegnon hit the side netting for Fulham in stoppage time.

According to The Guardian, Fulham had almost 65 percent of possession and attempted 25 shots, but Palace were more effective in front of goal. Fulham have conceded seven times across their opening three league matches, while Palace earned a fourth consecutive away win at Fulham. Chilwell, signed from Strasbourg on deadline day after previously helping Palace win the FA Cup during a loan spell, marked his return with the match-winning contribution.
