Avalanche Coach Bednar Hospitalized After Taking Puck to Head in Overtime Loss to Golden Knights
Colorado head coach Jared Bednar was struck by a deflected puck in the third period and did not finish the game, forcing assistant Dave Hakstol to take over bench duties.

DENVER — Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar was transported to a local hospital for evaluation after being struck in the side of the head by a deflected puck during Saturday's game against the Vegas Golden Knights.

The incident occurred early in the third period of a game the Avalanche would eventually lose 3-2 in overtime. Bednar was immediately assisted by team trainers and did not return to the bench for the remainder of the contest.

Following the game, the team confirmed that Bednar remained alert and conscious but was undergoing further evaluation including a CT scan. Assistant coach Dave Hakstol stepped in to handle bench duties for the remainder of the contest, working alongside Nolan Pratt.

The timing of the injury could not have been worse for the Avalanche, who are navigating the final stretch of the regular season. Colorado is set to embark on a quick back-to-back two-game road trip through Alberta, though Pratt indicated after the game that decisions on resting players for that stretch have yet to be determined.

The incident brought attention to a broader roster management discussion. When asked earlier in the week about resting players following the win against Calgary, Bednar had suggested the final three games would be the appropriate time for that. With the postseason approaching, the coaching staff now faces difficult decisions about player workload.

Should the Avalanche opt to rest key contributors, the team will need to call up depth players from the AHL. Ivan Ivan and Gavin Brindley are candidates to get looks up front, while Jack Ahcan would likely see time on defense.

The game itself saw the Avalanche fall behind before mounting a comeback. The Golden Knights controlled much of the third period, outshooting Colorado 11-6 with the game tied 2-2 throughout the frame. Goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood came up big repeatedly to keep his team in it, though he was ultimately handed the overtime loss.

Nathan MacKinnon had a golden opportunity late in the third period that he was unable to convert. The star center remains at 52 goals on the season, with Montreal's Cole Caufield closing in at 51 as the Rocket Richard Trophy race heats up. The Canadiens have two games remaining while Colorado has three, raising questions about how much MacKinnon will play down the stretch.

On a brighter local note, the Denver University Pioneers captured another national championship, adding to the city's hockey pedigree. The Avalanche will look to follow that lead as they push toward the postseason.
