BBC ends Women's Football Show as WSL highlights move online

The BBC has discontinued The Women's Football Show for the new Women's Super League season, ending the weekly studio highlights programme that had aired on BBC One. The Guardian reports that the broadcaster intends to place greater emphasis on digital distribution while maintaining live coverage of the competition.

The former programme featured a presenter and pundits and was previously made available on BBC iPlayer before its late-Sunday television slot. Under the revised approach, highlights from WSL matches will be distributed through iPlayer, the BBC Sport website and app, and a newly launched BBC women's football channel on YouTube.

A BBC spokesperson told the Guardian that the broadcaster remains committed to women's football and the WSL. The BBC said it will carry highlights from every league match across its platforms, show 25 WSL games live and continue live coverage of the Uefa Women's Champions League as preparations build toward the 2027 Women's World Cup.

The BBC and Sky Sports are entering the second season of a five-year domestic WSL broadcast agreement running through 2030. Every league match is available live under that deal, with Sky showing the large majority and the BBC retaining a package of games for free-to-air coverage.

The Guardian also reports that the BBC is planning a YouTube discussion show about women's football presented by Alex Scott, with former and current England internationals expected to appear regularly. The broadcaster declined to comment specifically on that planned programme, so its precise format and panel have not been formally confirmed.

The shift follows other changes to the BBC's football output. Channel 4 and TNT Sports now hold Women's FA Cup rights in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland through 2028, while the BBC stopped broadcasting Football Focus earlier this year. The new WSL season begins on Friday with London City Lionesses hosting Manchester United.
