Bayern Say Medication Change Led to Jamal Musiala Collapses
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany says a change in Jamal Musiala's medication contributed to the midfielder collapsing twice during recent pre-season matches. BBC Sport reported that the incidents occurred four days apart in friendlies against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim.
Watch the highlights:
Musiala said earlier this week that he is receiving treatment for a neurological dysfunction that causes seizures which are temporary, brief and treatable. Bayern said signs of the condition had appeared before the World Cup and that the club knew about it before the start of last season, although it had not previously affected him while playing football. The recent friendlies were therefore the first occasions on which Bayern had seen the condition interrupt his participation in a match.
Speaking before Bayern's German Supercup match against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, Kompany said a slight adjustment to Musiala's treatment produced side effects. He also said the club has gathered more information and made decisions with help from leading experts. Kompany stressed that the player has the full support of the team.
Sporting director Max Eberl said Bayern and Musiala's teammates had known about the condition throughout last season. According to Eberl, Musiala wanted the information to be made public, and the club will continue to support him as it manages the situation alongside the player.
Musiala has been ruled out of the Supercup, along with Lennard Maloney and Serge Gnabry. Kompany said the 23-year-old will train individually for the remainder of the week before Bayern begin their Bundesliga title defence against Stuttgart. The coach did not provide a firm date for Musiala's return to match action.
BBC Sport also reported that Musiala described the seizures as part of his everyday life after Tuesday's collapse. The report explained that absence seizures can involve a brief loss of awareness and, in some cases, loss of balance or unresponsiveness. Bayern's account links the two recent on-field episodes to the treatment adjustment, while the club continues to rely on medical guidance over Musiala's training and availability.
