Bayern beat Magdeburg 6–1 as Kompany returns home from hospital
Michael Olise scored twice as Bayern Munich advanced in the German Cup under Aaron Danks. Vincent Kompany was discharged from hospital, but no date has been set for his return.

Bayern Munich defeated Magdeburg 6–1 in the German Cup on Wednesday, with assistant coach Aaron Danks leading the team on the day Vincent Kompany was discharged from hospital. According to the Guardian’s match report, Michael Olise scored twice as the holders overcame the second-tier visitors in the last-32 tie at the Allianz Arena.

Watch the highlights:

Olise put Bayern ahead after 10 minutes from an Ismael Saibari assist, but Mateusz Zukowski equalised five minutes later. The hosts regained the lead midway through the first half when Olise supplied Saibari. Olise then converted a penalty early in the second half to extend Bayern’s advantage and complete his own scoring for the evening.

Lennart Karl provided the assists for goals by Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown before David Santos Daiber scored in stoppage time. Harry Kane was rested for the match, the Guardian reported. Before kick-off, his teammates formed a guard of honour for the Ballon d’Or winner in front of a crowd of 75,000.

Away from the result, BBC Sport reported that Kompany had been allowed home after collapsing at Bayern’s training ground the previous Friday. The 40-year-old had become ill while watching the club’s second team train and was taken to hospital. Bayern board member Max Eberl told German broadcaster ARD that meningeal irritation had been identified as the cause and that Kompany would continue recovering through rest and medication.

There is still no confirmed date for the head coach’s return. Although Eberl expressed confidence about his recovery, the BBC noted that Bayern had said on Saturday his absence would be measured in weeks rather than days. Kompany had been dealing with a virus before the collapse and had missed some training sessions, as well as the news conference before the Champions League match against Arsenal.

Danks had already overseen a 3–1 Bundesliga victory at Freiburg on Sunday, according to the BBC. Bayern, who lead the league, are due to face Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. The cup win adds another result during Kompany’s absence, while his return to coaching remains dependent on his recovery.
