Bavuma hits 179 as South Africa recover to 425-9 against Australia
Temba Bavuma scored 179 as South Africa recovered from 110-6 to declare at 425-9 on the third day of the second Test against Australia in Gqeberha. Australia reached the close on 3-1, trailing by 422 runs, after Kagiso Rabada dismissed Nic Maddinson in the opening over of their reply. Two days remain in a match already heavily affected by lost playing time.
Watch the highlights:
Bavuma's innings lasted 552 minutes and was his highest score in Test cricket, surpassing his previous best of 172, according to BBC Sport's report. He had arrived with South Africa at 12-2 on the first day and remained at the crease across three days. The captain's fifth Test century provided the foundation for a recovery after Australia's bowlers had removed six batters with only 110 on the board.
Marco Jansen supplied 85 from 100 balls, hitting nine fours and three sixes, while Simon Harmer made 82 from 157 deliveries. The BBC scorecard records Bavuma's 179 coming from 334 balls, with 18 fours and one six. Scott Boland finished with 5-81 from 29 overs, and Mitchell Starc took three wickets for 89. South Africa's innings eventually stretched to 127.1 overs before the declaration.
Bavuma added 132 with Jansen and then 183 with Harmer, a partnership the BBC reported was South Africa's highest for the eighth wicket in Tests. Harmer was bowled by Marnus Labuschagne with the total at 425. Bavuma fell to Starc on the next delivery, caught by wicketkeeper Alex Carey, and South Africa declared without adding to that score.
Rabada immediately gave the hosts a breakthrough, having Maddinson caught by Harmer for a four-ball duck. Australia faced only four overs before the close, with Travis Head unbeaten on one and Boland on two. According to the BBC report, deteriorating light prevented further seam bowling after Rabada's opening over; three overs of spin followed before play ended.
Only 42 overs had been possible during the first two days, leaving South Africa limited time to turn their recovery into victory. Bavuma said weather concerns had influenced the timing of the declaration and expressed hope that the teams would be able to stay on the field for most of the remaining two days. Australia won the first Test, while Cape Town is due to host the third.
