Bartlett's 92 Keeps Northamptonshire Competitive at Old Trafford
George Bartlett’s 92 gave Northamptonshire a competitive first-innings total before two late wickets checked Lancashire’s reply on day two of their County Championship Division Two match at Emirates Old Trafford. The visitors were dismissed for 284, then reduced Lancashire to 68-2 before bad light ended play seven overs early.
Watch the highlights:
BBC Sport, carrying a report from the ECB Reporters’ Network, said Bartlett’s innings anchored Northamptonshire after an unsettled morning. The visitors resumed with Luke Procter and Nathan McSweeney at the crease, but McSweeney was lbw to debutant Ben Walkden for 20. Walkden then bowled Saif Zaib for three, while Tom Bailey removed Procter for 39.
James Sales and Bartlett guided Northamptonshire to 134-5 at lunch. Sales edged behind off George Balderson for 19 shortly after the interval, but Bartlett then shared a 91-run stand with Lewis McManus. That partnership lifted the score to 225 before McManus was caught at slip by Marcus Harris, giving the slow left-arm bowler his first Lancashire wicket.
Bartlett reached his fourth half-century of the season and helped Northamptonshire advance to 248-7 by tea. Liam Guthrie and Ben Sanderson departed in successive overs after the break, but Bartlett added another 27 for the final wicket with Yuzi Chahal. Balderson eventually dismissed him eight runs short of a century and finished as Lancashire’s leading bowler with 4-70. Walkden returned 3-33 from 13 overs on debut.
Lancashire openers Keaton Jennings and Harris put on 45 in difficult conditions. Harris received a reprieve on eight when Bartlett dropped him at third slip off Guthrie, but he later edged Procter behind for 25. Sanderson then trapped Josh Bohannon lbw for four, leaving Jennings and Arav Shetty to take the hosts to 68-2 before the light deteriorated.
Lancashire collected three points from the day and Northamptonshire one. The match remained open at stumps: Lancashire still trailed by 216 runs with eight first-innings wickets standing, while Northamptonshire’s late breakthroughs kept them involved after Bartlett’s innings had prevented the visitors from being dismissed cheaply.
