Barry winner lifts Everton to seventh with another victory over Newcastle
Everton beat Newcastle United 1-0 at St James' Park on Monday, with Thierno Barry scoring the winner, The Guardian reported. Everton's own match report confirmed that the result moved David Moyes' team into seventh place in the Premier League.
Watch the highlights:
Barry struck four minutes after half-time when Lukas Hornicek failed to hold Tyrique George's low effort. The striker finished from close range for his eighth goal of the season. Everton said the victory was their third in succession at Newcastle's ground, extending a productive run at the venue.
The visitors still needed important defensive interventions. James Tarkowski cleared after Anthony Elanga's effort travelled along the goal line, while Jordan Pickford later stopped Yoane Wissa with his legs. Newcastle finished with 10 players after substitute Jacob Ramsey received two late yellow cards.
Moyes had restored Jarrad Branthwaite to the starting side after concussion protocols, with Harrison Armstrong replacing Hayden Hackney in midfield. Those changes followed Everton's home cup win over Newcastle, making this a second success against the same opponents across two competitions.
The earlier meeting ended 3-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday and secured a Carabao Cup quarter-final against League Two side Fleetwood Town. According to Everton's account of that match, James Garner and Hackney scored before the interval, with Barry adding the third after the break. Dan Burn's late header reduced Newcastle's deficit but did not alter the outcome or prevent Everton from advancing to the last eight of the competition.
Hackney's contribution in that cup tie included helping create Garner's opener before scoring his first Everton goal on his third start since joining from Middlesbrough. Barry supplied the cross for Hackney's finish, then scored himself after a pass from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. He took a touch before driving his shot into the top corner. Newcastle introduced Wissa, Joelinton and Elanga at half-time in that game, but Everton protected their lead. Monday's league result added three points to the cup progress already secured against Matthias Jaissle's side.
