Barry strikes as Everton beat Newcastle again while Grealish remains out
Thierno Barry scored the only goal as Everton beat Newcastle United 1-0 at St James' Park on Monday, completing a second victory over the same opponents in five days. BBC Sport reported that the Premier League result followed Everton's 3-1 Carabao Cup win on Thursday, with Jack Grealish absent from both matches.
Watch the highlights:
Barry's latest goal took him to eight in 12 appearances this season, matching the total he produced across 41 games last term, according to BBC Sport. Among Premier League players, only Erling Haaland, with 13, has scored more in all competitions this season. Barry had also scored against Newcastle in the cup meeting.
The winner followed a Lukas Hornicek error from Tyrique George's shot, the Guardian reported. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle disputed the build-up, telling BBC Sport that Fabian Schar had been fouled. Barry, meanwhile, told Sky Sports that his summer work was producing results and said he wanted to enjoy this season more than the last.
The 24-year-old French forward joined Everton from Villarreal last summer for £27m. BBC Sport reported that he is now the club's only recognised senior striker following Beto's move to Fiorentina. His current scoring run contrasts with a difficult opening period on Merseyside, when he managed just one shot in his first 16 Everton appearances.
Grealish's situation remained unresolved after the victory. BBC Sport reported that the 31-year-old Manchester City loanee had been omitted from Thursday's squad by the club after a disciplinary issue involving what was thought to be an unauthorised absence from training. Everton attributed his absence from Monday's match to a lack of fitness, but manager David Moyes did not elaborate on that explanation afterwards.
Moyes told BBC Sport that Grealish remained unavailable and that any decision about his return would be made with the club. He declined to clarify whether the disciplinary matter had been concluded. Although the Everton manager said there was still a way back for the midfielder, he did not give a timetable for his return to the team.
