Barry winner gives Everton first away league victory as Newcastle finish with ten
Everton claimed their first away Premier League victory of the season with a 1–0 win at Newcastle United on Monday, November 2. Thierno Barry scored after the interval, while Newcastle substitute Jacob Ramsey was dismissed in stoppage time. Sky Sports reported that the result lifted David Moyes’s side to seventh and left Newcastle in 13th place.
Watch the highlights:
Newcastle’s official match report described several opportunities before the break without a goal. Harvey Barnes sent in threatening deliveries, and James Tarkowski blocked Joelinton’s shot on the turn. Dan Burn headed wide from the resulting corner. At the other end, Merlin Röhl shot over, Barry failed to make contact when well positioned, and Harrison Armstrong missed from close range just before half-time.
The decisive moment arrived in the 49th minute, according to Sky Sports. A quickly taken free-kick by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall released Tyrique George, whose attempt went beneath goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček. Barry finished from close range. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle disputed the goal afterwards, arguing that Barry had fouled Fabian Schär with an elbow during the build-up, but the goal stood.
Everton continued to create chances after taking the lead. Newcastle’s account recorded Horníček saving a looping Jarrad Branthwaite header, then denying Dewsbury-Hall and another Branthwaite header. Schär went close at the opposite end with an effort from distance. Those opportunities came before Newcastle’s late attempts to rescue a point, with Everton still holding the only goal of the match.
Anthony Elanga could not convert after a Barnes delivery reached the danger area. Ramsey later shot wide, and William Osula headed off target. Newcastle’s report also credited Jordan Pickford with stopping two Yoane Wissa efforts, including a save with his feet. Ramsey then received two yellow cards in added time, leaving the home side a player short for the closing stages.
Sky Sports reported boos at both half-time and the final whistle. Jaissle accepted responsibility for the performance and said his players had lacked bravery in possession. The defeat followed Newcastle’s 3–1 Carabao Cup loss to Everton on Thursday, giving Moyes’s team victories over the same opponents in successive meetings across two competitions.
