Barry matches last season’s goal tally as Everton beat Newcastle 1-0
Thierno Barry equalled his goal total from last season as Everton defeated Newcastle United 1-0 at St James’ Park on Monday, moving into seventh place in the Premier League. According to BBC Sport’s match report, the striker’s 49th-minute finish secured Everton’s first league victory since September and their second win over Newcastle in five days.
Watch the highlights:
The breakthrough came after Tyrique George advanced into the penalty area without being tracked. His low effort slipped beneath goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, leaving Barry to finish from close range. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle disputed the goal, telling the BBC that he believed Fabian Schar had been fouled during the build-up. The goal stood, and Newcastle were unable to find an equaliser.
Barry now has eight goals from 12 appearances in all competitions this season, matching the eight he scored across 41 matches in the previous campaign. He had also scored in Everton’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Newcastle on Thursday. BBC Sport reported that Erling Haaland, with 13, is the only Premier League player to have scored more goals across all competitions this season.
Everton had opportunities to extend their advantage, with Hornicek saving a Jarrad Branthwaite header in the second half. At the other end, Jordan Pickford and the post kept out Anthony Elanga’s effort in the 66th minute after a cross from Harvey Barnes. Pickford then used his feet to deny substitute Yoane Wissa in the 90th minute, helping Everton preserve their fourth clean sheet in nine league games.
Newcastle finished with 10 players after substitute Jacob Ramsey received a second yellow card in the eighth minute of stoppage time for a challenge on Harrison Armstrong. The defeat left Jaissle’s side 13th, with four losses in their past five matches across all competitions. They have won only one of their five home league games this season and have yet to keep a league clean sheet at St James’ Park.
Speaking to Sky Sports in comments carried by the BBC, Barry credited his summer work for his improved scoring return and said he was enjoying helping the team. Everton manager David Moyes welcomed the striker’s contribution while acknowledging that other chances had gone unfinished. The result took Everton to 13 points, two behind fifth-placed Liverpool.
