Barnsley record appearance holder Barry Murphy dies aged 86
Barnsley have announced the death of Barry Murphy, their record appearance holder, at the age of 86. The former full-back, widely known as Spud, made 569 appearances for the club during a playing career that ran from 1962 to 1978, according to BBC Sport's report of the announcement.
Watch the highlights:
Murphy arrived from South Shields and spent his entire 16-year Football League career with Barnsley. His place in the club's records extended beyond his overall appearance total: he played 182 consecutive games, became Barnsley's first substitute in 1965 and received their player-of-the-year award in 1972. The club described itself as heartbroken by his death.
His work at Oakwell continued as he moved into coaching. Murphy became a player-coach in 1975 and served on Allan Clarke's staff after retiring from playing. He followed Clarke to Leeds United in 1980 and stayed at Elland Road until 1984. The BBC also reported that he returned to Oakwell for guest appearances and regularly hosted club charity events.
Barnsley had recognised his contribution with a place among the inaugural inductees to their Hall of Fame in 2018. In a separate tribute published on its official LinkedIn account, the club recounted the unveiling of the Barry Murphy Stand on 2 April. Murphy had been taken on a stadium tour without knowing what was planned, before being surprised by his family and seeing the renamed stand.
His continuing connection with supporters was also reflected in a charity appearance documented by Barnsley Hospice in September 2024. Murphy joined Danny Wilson, Allan Clarke, Adam Hammill, Jon Parkin and Gerry Taggart at a Legends Night at Barnsley Metrodome. Around 250 fans attended the event on 29 August, hearing the former players and managers answer questions about their experiences at the club.
The hospice said the evening raised £10,411 through admission tickets, a raffle and an auction of football memorabilia. That appearance came decades after Murphy's final playing season at Barnsley, alongside other former club figures sharing their memories with supporters to raise money for a local charity.
