Barnard's eight wickets seal innings win for Warwickshire in Cardiff

Warwickshire completed an innings-and-257-run victory over Glamorgan inside two days at Sophia Gardens, dismissing the hosts for 65 in their second innings after building a first-innings total of 391. BBC Sport reported that the result earned the Bears 22 points and intensified the pressure on their County Championship Division One title rivals with two rounds left.

The visitors resumed day two on 154 for three and continued to build a decisive lead. Sam Hain made 76 and shared an 86-run partnership with captain Ed Barnard, who scored 51 from 72 balls. Those contributions followed Will Young's 60 on the opening day, while wicketkeeper Kai Smith finished unbeaten on 49 as Warwickshire established a first-innings advantage of 322.

Glamorgan had already been bowled out for 69 in their first innings, when George Bamber took five for 28 and Barnard claimed three for five. Their second attempt began with teenage debutant Jack Hope-Bell completing a pair after edging Chris Woakes to slip. Asa Tribe and Kiran Carlson then carried the score to 42 before Warwickshire triggered another collapse.

Four wickets fell in successive overs. Barnard trapped Tribe lbw for 27 and had Colin Ingram caught at slip, while Oliver Hannon-Dalby removed Carlson lbw and bowled Ben Kellaway. Barnard and Manav Suthar then cleared out the lower order, with Glamorgan's final four wickets falling without another run being added.

Barnard took five for 13 in the second innings to complete match figures of eight for 18. Suthar collected three wickets without conceding a run, and Warwickshire bowled Glamorgan out twice in fewer than 53 overs across the match. Glamorgan's two totals of 69 and 65 underlined the scale of a defeat completed before the scheduled halfway point.

BBC Sport reported that the early finish temporarily put Warwickshire at the top of Division One while other matches continued. The Bears next travel to Essex for a match beginning on September 15. Glamorgan, who received three points from the Cardiff defeat, visit Surrey on the same date as they seek a response to consecutive batting collapses.
