Barcelona Winger Vicky López Reflects on Record-Breaking Journey at 19
Vicky López has never been one to shy away from making history. At just 19 years, eight months, and 12 days old, the Spanish winger has already etched her name into Barcelona's record books as the youngest player, male or female, to debut at Camp Nou, in the Champions League, and in el clásico.
Since arriving at her dream club in July 2022 as a 16-year-old, López has accumulated an impressive collection of achievements. With over 120 appearances and 32 goals to her name, she has captured 11 trophies including four Liga F titles. This season alone, she has featured in 36 matches and netted 10 goals, with Barcelona needing just three points from their remaining five games to secure another league crown.
López explained her mindset when joining the club: She arrived with the intention to be part of the first team immediately. This season represents her most active year yet, following three challenging seasons of adaptation. Her ability to finally enjoy her football has been transformative.
The Madrid native's journey to Barcelona glory has not been without challenges. Her mother passed away from a brain tumor in 2018 when López was just 11 years old. Despite this devastating loss, her passion for football never wavered. She honors her mother after every goal by pointing skyward, a touching tribute that has become her signature celebration.
Before joining Barcelona, López made headlines as Liga F's youngest player at 15 with Madrid CFF. Her single season in Spain's top division caught Barcelona's attention, leading to a five-year contract that would transform her career.
López admits she was initially shy upon arrival, particularly during her first training sessions where the pace was completely different. However, training with the best in the world was everything she wanted.
Barcelona captain and two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas has taken notice of López's development. Putellas sees herself reflected in López, noting her passion for the sport and drive to win.
With Barcelona preparing for a Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich on April 25, López continues to showcase the qualities that make her special. Often compared to Lamine Yamal for their similar playing styles and shared number 19 jersey, López brings what she calls joy, youth and playfulness to the squad.
López believes a mix of young players and veterans is ideal for any team. She continues working to become who she wants to be while enjoying football and transmitting happiness to those who watch her play.
As López looks toward the future, her trajectory suggests even greater achievements lie ahead for this remarkable young talent.
