Bamber's Five-Wicket Burst Puts Warwickshire in Control at Cardiff

Ethan Bamber took five wickets as Warwickshire seized control of their County Championship Division One match against Glamorgan on the opening day in Cardiff. BBC Sport reported that the hosts were dismissed for 69 before Warwickshire reached 154-3, giving the title-chasing visitors an 85-run lead with seven first-innings wickets remaining.

Rain delayed the start at Sophia Gardens, but Warwickshire quickly made use of the available play after Glamorgan won the toss and chose to bat. Bamber bowled first-class debutant Jack Hope-Bell and captain Kiran Carlson for ducks inside the opening three overs, leaving the home side at 3-2 and beginning a collapse that lasted only one session.

Bamber claimed the first five wickets of the innings and finished with 5-28. Colin Ingram briefly resisted with four boundaries, but Bamber bowled him for 19. Ingram was Glamorgan's top scorer and the only batter to reach double figures during an innings in which the home side could not establish a partnership.

Warwickshire captain Ed Barnard added three wickets for five runs, including lbw dismissals of Chris Cooke and Timm van der Gugten. Left-arm spinner Manav Suthar completed the innings by bowling Pakistan international Mir Hamza for a duck. Glamorgan's two team changes also included Jamie McIlroy, making his first red-ball appearance since May.

Warwickshire then strengthened their position through an opening stand of 65 between Ryan Yates and Will Young. Yates made 35, with six boundaries, before top-edging a sweep from Ben Kellaway to Mason Crane. Kellaway struck again when Dan Mousley was caught at mid-off for five, but Young continued to attack and reached 60 with nine boundaries before Hamza bowled him.

Sam Hain was unbeaten on 25 at the close as Warwickshire ended a dominant day on 154-3. Glamorgan also saw Asa Tribe leave the field after he was struck on the helmet by a Young shot while stationed at short leg. The visitors collected three points to Glamorgan's one and will begin day two seeking to extend an already substantial advantage.
